Frequently asked questions
01
What is a database check for identity verification?
A database check compares user-supplied information with an authoritative or trusted source, such as a civil registry, national-ID record, tax file, electoral roll, or credit file. It can confirm that selected attributes match or retrieve verified data for a resolved record.
02
How is a database check different from a wallet or biometric registry?
A database check does not require the user to present a signed wallet credential. Unlike a biometric registry, it does not necessarily bind the source record to the person through a face, fingerprint, or iris match. It is usually an API or hosted lookup flow.
03
What is the difference between database matching and enrichment?
Matching asks whether submitted attributes correspond to the source and may return a binary, field-level, or confidence result. Enrichment resolves the record and returns additional authoritative attributes. Neither should be described as user authentication unless the flow also establishes user control or presence.
04
How strong is a database check?
Strength depends on the source, the number and secrecy of the inputs, anti-automation controls, and whether the flow adds possession or biometric binding. A fraudster who already knows the correct identifier and personal details may pass a weak match, even when the source itself is authoritative.
05
What should a business evaluate before using database checks?
Evaluate source authority and freshness, required inputs, matching and transliteration rules, consent and permitted purpose, possession or step-up controls, returned attributes, retention limits, and mismatch handling. A mismatch can reflect stale or inconsistent records rather than fraud.
