eID cards are government-issued identity cards that can be verified electronically, usually by reading the card's chip with a card reader or an NFC-enabled phone, or by checking a digitally signed QR code. Many require a PIN or extra hardware to complete verification.

Frequently asked questions
01
What is an eID card?
An eID card is a government-issued identity card that can be verified electronically, not just by looking at it. Most carry a secure chip whose cryptographic keys or certificates authenticate the holder or sign a digital transaction. Some, such as the Philippine National ID, instead carry a digitally signed QR code.
02
How does eID card verification work?
The user connects the card through a contact reader or NFC-capable phone, selects the applicable certificate or function, and usually enters a PIN. The relying party or companion app then validates the cryptographic response and certificate status. Exact steps depend on the national scheme.
03
Are all eID cards NFC-enabled?
No. Some cards use a contact chip and require a dedicated reader, while others can be read by an NFC-capable phone. Reading biographical data from a contactless identity document also does not automatically invoke the card's electronic-authentication function.
04
Does every eID card provide eIDAS high assurance or a qualified electronic signature?
No. An eID card is a form factor, not an assurance level. A particular scheme may support authentication, electronic signatures, or both, and eIDAS rules may apply to specific schemes or certificates. Qualified-signature capability must be verified provider by provider.
05
What should a business evaluate before accepting eID cards?
Evaluate whether target users have the required card, PIN, reader, middleware, browser support, or companion app; whether the flow works on desktop and mobile; which attributes and functions are exposed; certificate and revocation handling; and what fallback exists when hardware or PIN recovery fails.
