Mobile driver's licenses are government-issued digital credentials held in an app on the user's phone. Most mobile driver's licenses authenticate the user to a high level of assurance with very low friction, while less-sophisticated solutions only show a static QR code or an on-screen image of the license.

Frequently asked questions
01
What is a mobile driver's license?
A mobile driver's license, or mDL, is a government-issued driver's license in digital form, usually held in an app or mobile wallet. A proper mDL contains signed, machine-verifiable data; it is not just a photograph, PDF, or visual copy of a plastic license.
02
How does mobile driver's license verification work?
The verifier requests specific attributes, the user opens the wallet, reviews the request, authenticates locally, and consents to share. The verifier then checks the issuer's signature and the integrity of the data. The flow may be remote through a QR code or deep link, or in person through proximity technologies.
03
What standards are used for mobile driver's licenses?
ISO/IEC 18013-5 defines core mDL interfaces, including proximity presentation and source authentication. ISO/IEC 18013-7 extends the standards family to online presentation. Supporting a message format alone is not enough: wallets, trust lists, extensions, and issuer signing keys still vary by implementation.
04
Can an mDL replace a physical driver's license everywhere?
Not automatically. Digital issuance and real-world acceptance are separate. An mDL may work with participating businesses or agencies while the physical card is still required elsewhere. Users should continue carrying the physical license until the issuing authority says otherwise.
05
What should a business evaluate before accepting mDLs?
Evaluate which issuers and wallet surfaces your customers use, whether you need remote or in-person presentation, how issuer trust is established, which attributes are available, and whether the flow supports data minimization. Also verify actual acceptance coverage rather than relying only on issuance or activation numbers.
