Frequently asked questions
01
What is a national ID wallet?
A national ID wallet is a government-operated or government-authorized digital identity system for citizens, residents, and sometimes visitors. It is often a front door to public services and may also support authentication, verified profile sharing, documents, or signatures for approved private businesses.
02
How is a national ID wallet different from an mDL or EUDI Wallet?
National ID Wallets are classified by their national operating and trust model. An mDL is a specific driver's-license credential, while EUDI is a regulated European wallet framework. One national wallet can overlap with either category depending on what it holds and how it is used.
03
What does a national ID wallet verification flow look like?
The user usually follows a QR code, redirect, or deep link into an app they already use, authenticates with a passcode or device biometric, reviews the request, and approves login or data sharing. Some systems can also prefill forms with authoritative government data.
04
Can any business automatically access a government wallet?
No. Government operation does not mean universal private-sector access. Contracts, relying-party registration, sector rules, approved purposes, and additional controls for sensitive attributes may apply. Authentication may be broadly available while profile data or signatures remain restricted.
05
How should a business assess adoption of a national ID wallet?
Separate eligible population, registered accounts, activated identities, and active users. Also evaluate private-sector acceptance, available attributes, recovery and fallback paths, and whether the target audience already uses the wallet regularly. Population coverage alone does not prove a usable verification channel.
