Frequently asked questions
01
What is a European Digital Identity Wallet?
A European Digital Identity Wallet is a regulated wallet created under the European Digital Identity Framework. It lets a user securely hold and present Person Identification Data and other electronic attestations of attributes to public or private relying parties.
02
How are EUDI Wallets different from eIDAS 1.0 identities?
eIDAS 1.0 centers on notified national eID schemes and cross-border authentication. EUDI introduces a user-controlled wallet and a broader credential ecosystem under the amended regulation. Existing national eIDs may continue alongside, or evolve into, EUDI wallet offerings.
03
What can an EUDI Wallet hold and share?
The core identity credential is Person Identification Data, or PID. A wallet may also hold attestations such as a mobile driving license, diploma, professional qualification, or other verified attribute. The wallet is the container; PID and other attestations are the credentials inside it.
04
How does an EUDI Wallet verification flow work for a business?
A business requests specific attributes and states the purpose. The wallet identifies the relying party, shows the request, asks the user to authenticate and consent, and then presents the requested data. Production acceptance also depends on relying-party registration, trust material, certificates, and local policy.
05
Is every announced national wallet already a certified EUDI Wallet?
No. An existing national app, announced roadmap, sandbox, or reference wallet is not evidence of current EUDI certification or production availability. Businesses should verify the status of each wallet and distinguish test support from certified production support.
